Technology not for all?

Today, as I was going through my usual routine of checking facebook after reaching home, I read this very interesting article. Technology has really advanced over the last 20 years. At first it was only limited to performing heavy calculations, however, it has rapidly expanded its presence in all industries. From computer industry to automobile, from health care to manufacturing. It has now got to the point where it has entered our homes. We can control everything in our homes just using an iPad or any other tablet. All of this makes me wonder what happens to the people negatively effected by this rise in technology.

Google has been testing driverless cars since last couple of years, what is to say that they may not sell this techology to a company say Uber and this may result in loss of jobs of thousands of people whose sole way of earning was driving. The same applies for all areas where AI is currently being tested. There was an article recently which highlighted that quite a few back office jobs will be done by machines in the future. So then what happens to the ordinary humans who are not technologically savvy or aren’t computer science majors or aren’t even graduates? It seems that lately technology is only benefiting a few people, while the median incomes are dropping. Wasn’t the whole purpose of improving technology was to make life better for whole rather than a few?

Jab Tak Hai Jaan poem

I was listening to radio today and heard this poem and instantly felt like blogging about this. The constant thump of Royal Enfield (Military Green) can be heard in the background throughout the video. The scenes in the video reminds me of the road trip from Manali to Ladakh – though we didn’t do it on the bike – the drive was equally pleasurable. The poem is extremely heart touching and I have listened to it a couple of times in the day already.

Teri aankhon ki namkeen mastiyan
Teri hansi ki beparwaah gustakhiyaan
Teri zulfon ki leharaati angdaiyaan
Nahi bhoolunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan

Tera haath se haath chhodna
Tera saayon se rukh modna
Tera palat ke phir na dekhna
Nahin maaf karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan

Baarishon mein bedhadak tere naachne se
Baat baat pe bewajah tere roothne se
Chhoti chhoti teri bachkani badmashiyon se
Mohabbat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan..

Tere jhoothe kasme vaadon se
Tere jalte sulagte khwabon se
Teri be-raham duaaon se
Nafrat karunga main
Jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan

Restaurant Review – Junoon

Latest update: Junoon has been rated as one star Michelin restaurant for 2016.

Last Friday we decided to go for dinner at Junoon, one of NYC finest Indian restaurants, as my sister-in-law was heading back to India and we wanted to celebrate her visit. Me and wife had previously dined at Junoon in August and found their food to be really good. Junoon has two dining areas – Patiala room and Main Dining hall. The key difference between the two is – you can order a-la-carte in Patiala room while enjoying your drinks, whereas you only have the option of tasting menu or ordering a 3 course meal when seated in the Main Dining Hall. Please make sure you select the dining areas when you make the reservations.

We made our reservations for main dining area for 8:30pm and I had put in a request to have a Bon Voyage cake to be brought to our table after the meal was over. We were a few minutes late, however, we didn’t have to wait for long to be seated. The seating provided to us was next to a pillar, with not enough space between pillar and the chair from the next table. Since we are vegetarians, we didn’t have a lot of options to choose from – 4 appetizers and 5 main course items between the 3 of us were the only choices which we had. We ordered our food and were happily chatting away when our first course of meal – appetizers arrived. We had ordered Lasooni Gobi, Eggplant chat and Lal Mirch Paneer, along with beer for me. The Paneer and Eggplant chat were really good, however, the Lasooni Gobi could have been better and we told the server about the same. We had finished our appetizers and waitstaff started to clear off these super heavy plates. As mentioned above, we were seated next to a pillar with not enough space between our table, the pillar and chair from the next table. The waitstaff who was holding the empty plates in her hand, was not able to balance the load of the plates properly and off came everything. The plates fell down and along with it took my glass of beer and water. As luck would have it, the beer and water fell on my jeans (in areas that cant be described here) causing embarrassment to me and the staff person who started apologizing profusely, whereas my wife and my sister-in-law started laughing after seeing wet patches on my jeans. We told the staff person to not worry about what has happened. My wife and sister-in-law even went to the extent of hugging her to make her feel comfortable.

The staff did ensure that they made up for this incident by providing additional dishes – so we were given an extra appetizer, daal, two vegetarian main courses, and curd raita. Just looking at all that much food, we were half full and I even protested about the quantity of additional food they were bringing to our table. However, the server was like don’t worry – you don’t have to cook for tomorrow. The food as usual was awesome and tasty. Our meals were followed with desserts, which were good too. The Mango Lassi and Chocolate were really good, however, the kulfi could be better. With the desserts done, the server asked if he should get the cake and I said yes. However, they got us chocolate with a candle in it and Happy Birthday written on the plate, instead of Bon Voyage and we were like okay – this isn’t what we asked for.  Apparently the chocolate mousse was over, so we had to make do with a chocolate bar (which the server once again apologized for). Also it seems that there was miscommunication, which resulted in incorrect message on the plate. Not knowing if we were going to get the message changed, we decided to have the chocolate bar, wished my sister-in-law a wonderful happy birthday in advance. However, the server was nice enough to get another plate with Bon Voyage written in chocolate syrup along with chocolate bar and marsh mellows in the plate. We had the chocolate bar (again) and called it an evening.

Inspite of some goof ups, it was an awesome evening full of fun and laughter. Thanks Junoon for the memories.

Channa Mereya

The title of the song “Channa Mereya” mean “My Moon”. This song is from the upcoming movie “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”. I heard this song a couple of days back and since then have been hooked on to it. There is something about Arijit Singh’s voice and the fact that the lyrics are equally good which has got me drawn to it. I think this has to be one of Arijit Singh’s best songs ever.

One of the best lines from the song..

“Andhera tera maine le liya
Mera ujla sitaara tere naam kiya”

and another one..

“Tere rukh se apna raasta
Mod ke chala
Chandan hoon main..
Apni khushboo chhod ke chala”

A  conversation to remember

Yesterday while returning home I decided to visit the Apple Store at the Westfield mall at World Trade Center in New York as I wanted to check out the Apple Watch. I had my headset on when I was browsing through the different Apple Watcheswhen this Apple care guy came next to me. He wrote on his iPhone note app that I can reach out to him if I needed any help and I told him I am okay with a thumbs up sign. After a few seconds I remembered this advertisement which I had seen on Facebook regarding an ongoing offer on Apple products. So I turned around and started speaking with the Apple Care guy about the offer. At that time he indicated through sign language that he can’t speak. I am not sure if he was deaf. For a moment, though I was taken aback and realised my mistake of assuming that the guy was typing on the Note App because I had my headphones on. After realising my mistake, I typed on the phone and asked him what I wanted to ask and he responded accordingly and to my satisfaction. The best part was he was smiling all the time while we were having this “conversation”. Along with me, he was also helping a couple of other folks at the same time and appeared to be enjoying his job.

I was wondering when such opportunities will be available for differently abled people in India. I could be wrong but I haven’t seen any differently abled folks working in any major retail stores in Mumbai. I know there are certain organisations are working really hard for the inclusion of differently abled folks but we as people need to be more accepting and have open minds about differently abled folks and their ability to do things. At the same time, I really feel like saluting Apple Inc. for giving opportunity to such talented people. May be there is a lesson for India Inc. somewhere in there.

Sanam Re

I heard this song yesterday for the first time and since then I have been playing the song in repeat mode. Arijit Singh is simply awesome!! I wish to see him live in concert one day. My cousin attended one of his concerts and was completely blown away by his performance.

O ho…

Bheegi bheegi sadkon pe main
Tera intezaar karun
Dheere dheere dil ki zameen ko
Tere hi naam karun

Khudko main yoon kho doon
Ke phir na kabhi paaun
Haule haule zindagi ko
Ab tere hawaale karun

Sanam re, sanam re
Tu mera sanam hua re
Sanam re, sanam re
Tu mera sanam hua re
Karam re, karam re
Tera mujhpe karam hua re

Sanam re, sanam re
Tu mera sanam hua re

O ho…

Tere kareeb jo hone laga hoon
To toote saare bharam re

Sanam re, sanam re
Tu mera sanam hua re
Sanam re, sanam re
Tu mera sanam hua re

O ho…

Baadalon ki tarah hi toh
Tune mujhpe saaya kiya hai
Baarishon ki tarah hi toh
Tune khushiyon se bhigaya hai
Aandhiyon ki tarah hi toh
Tune hosh ko udaaya hai

Mera muqaddar sanwara hai yoon
Naya savera jo laaya hai tu
Tere sang hi bitaane hain mujhko
Mere saare janam re

Sanam re, sanam re (sanam re..)
Tu mera sanam hua re
Sanam re, sanam re (sanam re..)
Tu mera sanam hua re
Karam re, karam re (karam re..)
Tera mujhpe karam hua re
Sanam re, sanam re (sanam re..)
Tu mera sanam hua re

O ho…

Mere sanam re mera hua re
Tera karam re mujhpe hua ye (x2)

Wazir

I had seen the trailer of this movie a couple of months ago and was excited by the pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar – two of of my favorite actors. I decided to watch the movie over the weekend and needless to say it is one of the better movies to have been released in the recent months. The acting by all the characters in the movie is simply awesome. Farhan Akhtar pulls of the role of an angry young man effortlessly. Amitabh Bachchan as usual is flawless. I think he is like wine, keeps getting better with age. The best part of the movie are it’s dialogues and that too when said by Amitabh Bachchan in his deep baritone – just sounds amazing. Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham have a special appearance.  The story is predictable but the way it has been portrayed using the game of chess is the most brilliant part of the movie. I do not want to share movie details here – but this is definitely one of the movies that you shouldn’t miss out on watching.

Reflections – 2015

This post should have come a little earlier; but then it is only week 1 in 2016 and not too late to do a little reflection for 2015. 2015 was an awesome year for me personally and professionally. Below are some of the moments which made it really awesome for me.

  1. My wife survived 5 years with me.
  2. Completed an impromptu Hampta pass trek with Saurav. You can read all the details in my previous posts.
  3. Moved with my wife in our apartment. After struggling to find a place which we both liked, we were finally able to finalize a place in 2014 and made the move in 2015.
  4. Visited New York city and had Chipotle after 9 years. Too damn filling. Also met my friends after a very long time.
  5. Got promoted… Hooray!!!
  6. 9 days, drove 2137 kms, places covered – Nathdwara, Mount Abu, Ambaji Temple, Patan, Bahucharaji Mandir, Ahmedabad and flying visit to Anand..- an awesome road trip with the family
  7. Traveled a lot this – Goa, Jawhar, Malshej Ghat, Somnath, Virpur, Pune, NYC, San Mateo etc. as per FB – covered 13 cities (i think it is a lot more than that)
  8. My colleagues getting me Ben & Jerry (after 2 years of persistence :P)
  9. Did a bike ride with a Royal Enfield group and had a good time with them.
  10. Ended the year by riding my Thunderbird 350 to Pune.

Day 7: 13th Sept 2015

We arrived at Chandigarh ISBT bus stop around 7am in the morning. The bus stop was teeming with people and our next target was to find ourselves a place to stay. We hadn’t really planned anything for today. It was hot outside and after coming from temperatures in single digits, we weren’t looking forward to venture out in Chandigarh. After much deliberation, we decided to spend the rest of the day at ISBT bus station itself. The bus station has dormitory on the upper floors and we got ourselves a room for Rs. 600 for the day. The beds were clean and the place alright. After negotiating with the manager, we used the shower in the next room and just watched movies for the rest of the day until it was time to go to the airport. We did some quick asking around and found out that there is a bus to the airport. We paid Rs.15 per person and took the bus to the airport. The bus ride was approximately 45 mins and was hassle free. The bus drops you outside of the airport and not inside. However, you can reach the airport in less than 10 mins walking. We had reached a couple of hours before the scheduled departure of the flight and spent the rest of our time idling away on the phone waiting for our flight to depart.

This trip was one of the best trips that I have ever had. The fact that we were able to complete the trek the way it was planned originally 3 years back only brought more joy in our hearts.
