I was watching Crime Patrol the other night and they were showing this episode about Sonali Mukherjee, who is a victim of acid attack. The episode shows in some detail how she was harassed by some youths in her locality and how she manages to reject their advances and fends them off. Only for the boys to come back with acid and throw it on her face. She suffered approx. 70% burns on her face and chest. This happened to her when she was only 17 years old. She was a NCC cadet, a bright student who was excellent in studies and had got a full scholarship to continue her education as she was not from a well to do family. With this attack, her future was ruined – life in shambles.
While I have heard about acid attacks, read about it on the newspapers, this is the first time I have seen it on TV. The entire episode was very moving and I was wondering why people cant take rejection? Why is it so easy for people to get acid from the stores? The saddest part was the people who did this to her, were arrested and let off by court after just spending 4 months in jail. What kind of justice is that? The people who have done this to her are leading normal lives, while she is suffering and fighting for her life, justice.

I just hope people learn to take rejection better and not resort to such things as it leaves victims scarred – physically and mentally for the rest of their lives.
