Day 55/ 365 – Dhoom 3

One of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year – Dhoom 3 releases today. There is so much buzz about the movie, that most of the tickets have been booked for the weekend. The general story line of the movie is – The bad guy steals, the good guy catches him, the bad guy becomes a good person or dies. Nothing different, right? The Dhoom franchise is famous for making its bad guys look really cool in the movies. In the first movie we had John Abraham who looked super cool riding a Hayabusa bike and robbing banks and casinos alike. Then we had a super suave thief with Greek God looks in Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 2 who would steal the rarest of rare artifacts and now Aamir Khan who plays a clown thief with a weird face tattoo who robs (God knows what) in Dhoom 3.

The only constant characters in the movie series are the good guys – Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. While Aamir is already an established super star, the careers of the other two baddies – John and Hrithik really took off after this movie. The other thing that has evolved with this series is the location where the baddies operated. John operated in India, Hrithik – the world over as they tried to show it and Aamir – primarily in the US as the trailers show. Another thing that has worked in the favor of the franchise is that so far the movies have been slick and fast paced. I am hoping that same continues in the upcoming movie. I just hope that in this movie – Abhishek Bachchan dies and Aamir wins.. buhahaha.

Day 45/ 365 – Funniest speech in a Hindi movie

The Teacher’s day speech from the movie 3 Idiots has to be the funniest dialogue of all times in a Hindi movie. It cracks me up every time I watch this movie. I remember watching this movie the first time in a theater and the first time I heard this speech I laughed till my stomach hurt.  The dialogue delivery along with the facial expressions of the character, Chatur Ramalingam, are just too good. I don’t think anyone could have done it better. Hence I decided to post the transcript of the dialogue, along with the translation below and relive the moment.

Original dialogue:

Adarniya sabhapati mahodaya …atithi vishesh shikshan mantri shri R D

tripati ji ..maanyaniya shikshagan aur mere piyaaare sahpatiyo …aaj
agar I.C.E aasmaan ki bulaaandiyo ko chhu raahaa hai ..to uska

Translation

Welcome our Chief guest, the Minister of Education. Welcome our respected Mr. Chairman(Dean), and our respected teachers and schoolmates… The reason our school can be so successful is only one person’s contribution, Dr. Viru Sahhastrabuddhe! Give him a big hand… He’s a great guy really… For 32 years, he has been continuously raping (The original word chamatkar means ‘doing wonders’ whereas balatkar means ‘rape’) college students… We believe that he will continue that. It’s so astonishing that a man can rape so many students perfectly in his life! His perseverance must come from his practicing! He devoted every moment to raping! We should learn from him! The students here will soon be all over the world. Wherever we go, we will continue to rape! We will make I.C.E proud ! We will show everyone that our ability to rape is incomparable!

Good evening, Mr. Minister of Education. You gave us one thing that we need most… Breasts (The original word means funds). Everyone has boobs, but they all hide it… No one would generously give them to others! But you gave your boobs to this rapist… Now you’ll see how he uses of it!

(Verse) A loud fart is respectable… A medium fart is tolerable… A slight fart is fearful… A silent fart is unbearable…!

Day 44/ 365 – Phir Le Aya Dil

Been listening to this song form the movie since last night and I feel it is one of the best songs/ ghazals out there. It has been sung beautifully by Rekha Bharadwaj.

Phir le aaya dil, Majboor kya kije
Raas na aaya, Rehna door kya kije
Dil keh raha,Usse maqammal kar bhi aao
Wo jo adhuri si, Baat baaki hai
Wo jo adhuri si, Yaad baaki hai
Karte hain hum, Aaj qabool kya kije
Ho gaye thi jo, Humse bhool kya kije
Dil keh raha, Usse mayassar, Kar bhi aao
Wo jo dabi si, Aas baaki hai
Wo jo dabi si, Aanch baaki hai
Kismat ko hai ye, Manzoor kya kije ye..
Milte rahe hum,Badastoor kya kije
Dil keh raha hai,Usse musalsal, Kar bhi aao,
Wo jo ruki si, Raah baaki hai
Wo jo ruki si, Chaah baaki hai

Translation (that isn’t half as good):
I return- my heart compelled, there was nothing I could do
For it didn’t quite agree with me, the staying away from you!
My heart tells me, that I should go
And find that incomplete, half lost memory
Of very long ago
I confess today, it cannot be undone
I admit to all mistakes, each and every one
The heart stirs again to a lost desire
Wants to stoke again, the embers
Of a dying fire
That’s the way fate would have it, there was nothing we could do
Our paths kept crossing, but in a way the world would want them to
My heart cannot still bid adieu
To that unfinished, stifled, yearning
For being with you…

Day 33/ 365 – Poems from ZNMD

Was watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara today on TV. It happens to be one of my favorite movies and I am never tired watching that movie. I watch it almost every time it comes on TV. One of the best part of the movie is poems which written by Javed Akhtar and recited by Farhan Akhtar. I am posting those poems below.

  1. Ik baat honton tak hai jo aayi nahin
    Bas ankhon say hai jhaankti
    Tumse kabhi, mujhse kabhi
    Kuch lafz hain woh maangti
Jinko pehanke honton tak aa jaaye woh
…Aawaaz ki baahon mein baahein daalke ithlaye woh
Lekin jo yeh ik baat hai
    Ahsas hi ahsas hai

Khushboo si hai jaise hawa mein tairti
    Khushboo jo be-aawaaz hai
    Jiska pata tumko bhi hai
    Jiski khabar mujhko bhi hai
    Duniya se bhi chupta nahin
    Yeh jaane kaisa raaz hai

  2. Jab jab dard ka baadal chaya
    Jab ghum ka saya lehraya
    Jab aansoo palkon tak aya
    Jab yeh tanha dil ghabraya

    Humne dil ko yeh samjhaya
…Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai
    Duniya mein yunhi hota hai

    Yeh jo gehre sannate hain
Waqt ne sabko hi baante hain
    Thoda ghum hai sabka qissa
    Thodi dhoop hai sabka hissa
Aankh teri bekaar hi nam hai
Har pal ek naya mausam hai
Kyun tu aise pal khota hai
Dil aakhir tu kyun rota hai

  3. Pighlay neelam sa behta hua yeh samaan
    Neeli neeli si khamoshiyaan
    Na kahin hai zameen
    Na kahin aasmaan
    Sarsaraati huyi tehniyaan, pattiyaan
Keh rahi hain ki bas ek tum ho yahaan
Sirf main hoon meri saansein hain aur meri dhadkanein
    Aisi gehraiyaan
    Aisi tanhaiyaan
    Aur main sirf main
Apne honay pe mujhko yaqeen aa gaya
  4. Dilon mein tum apni
    Betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho
    Toh zinda ho tum
    Nazar mein khwabon ki
    Bijliyan leke chal rahe ho
    Toh zinda ho tum
    Hawa ke jhokon ke jaise
    Aazad rehno sikho
    Tum ek dariya ke jaise
    Lehron mein behna sikho
Har ek lamhe se tum milo
    Khole apni bhaayein
Har ek pal ek naya samha
    Dekhen yeh nigahaein
    Jo apni aankhon mein
    Hairaniyan leke chal rahe ho
    Toh zinda ho tum
    Dilon mein tum apni
    Betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho
    Toh zinda ho tum

Day 28/ 365 – Song in my head

Lately have been listening to the song “Nagada Dhol Baje” from the movie Ram Leela. The song is extremely catchy with awesome garba music. I saw the video a few days back and was immediately impressed with some of the dance steps. There is something about Gujarati music which attracts me (yes I know being a gujju, I am going to say that). However, I think folks songs in any language are really soothing to hear. Unfortunately, I don’t have a ear for other languages, heard a bit of Rabindra Sangeet while I was in Kolkata and some Rajasthani folk music, since I keep visiting Rajasthan often. Other than that, I don’t really know any of the folk songs. The link for the video is below.. Enjoy.

Day 25/ 365 – Movie Review – Thor 2

As mentioned in my previous post, I watched Thor 2 (first day first show again!!) on Friday. Before the movie started, saw the trailer of the movie Sholay in 3D with enhanced sound effects. I was extremely impressed with the trailer and have decided to watch the movie in 3D once it releases. I am not sure of the box office response the movie would get. But I sure am going for the movie.

Warning – Spoiler ahead

The story revolves around weapon Aether which was previously owned by  Dark Elf Malekith. Odin’s father defeats him in battle and decides to bury Aether in a place deep down, where no one could find it. Loki is imprisoned after his deeds in New York, while Thor is fighting in Vanaheim to bring peace to the Nine Realms. Meanwhile Jane Foster is in London along with her assistant Darcy who takes her to an abandoned factory where the laws of physics are behaving oddly and objects are disappearing in thin air. Basically the objects get teleported to another world. Jane accidentally discovers Aether and it gets lodged in her body. In the meanwhile, Asgardians learn of the convergence where Nine Realms are aligned in a straight line. When Heimdall is not able to see Jane, he informs Thor of the same and he brings her along to Asgard. The doctors in Asgard are not able to remove Aether as it protects Jane against any threats, but at the same time is killing her.

The discovery of Aether activates Dark Elf Malekith, who was in a deep sleep after his defeat at the hands of Odin’s father. They discover that the Aether is at Asgard and attack Asgard. In their first attack, they are not able to take Aether with them as Jane was hidden by Thor’s mother who dies protecting her. However, the threat is imminent and Thor decides to take Jane to Svartalfheim (Dark World). However, Odin does not support the plan, thus requiring Thor to seek Loki’s help to escape from Asgard.

Thor, Loki and Foster confront Malekith and his forces, where Loki tricks Malekith into drawing the Aether out of her. However, Thor’s attempt to destroy the substance fails, and the Aether-empowered Malekith leaves with his ship. Loki appears to be fatally wounded while protecting Jane. Thor, cradling Loki, promises to tell their father of his sacrifice. Loki replies, “I didn’t do it for him” before evidently dying in Thor’s arms. Thor and Jane reunite with Selvig, Darcy and Ian, Darcy’s intern, in London after discovering another portal in a nearby cave. They learn that Malekith plans to unleash the Aether to destroy the universe, and that he will do this in Greenwich, the center of the Convergence. Thor battles Malekith, but a portal separates them, leaving Malekith unopposed. Thor comes back in time to help Jane, Selvig, Darcy and Ian use their scientific equipment to transport Malekith to Svartalfheim, killing him before he can destroy the universe.

I found the movie to be extremely good and thoroughly enjoyable. I wouldn’t disclose what happens in the end, because that’s the best part about the movie. The special effects in the movie were too good and once again Loki steals the show. I absolutely love the character. He is smart, cunning, full of tricks, while Thor is simple, honest and easily trusting – the two characters couldn’t be any more opposite.  I love the way Marvel makes their movie and introduces one character at a time. Eagerly looking forward now to Captain America – The Winter Soldier.

Day 24/ 365 – Thor 2 – The Dark World

I will be watching this movie today – first day first show (atleast in Mumbai). Until a few years ago, I wasn’t even aware of the super hero called as Thor. All I knew were Superman, Spiderman, Batman and Phantom and I could say that I wasn’t a big fan of any of them. I didn’t keep up with the comics, or with the movies when they came out or for that matter television series (Smallville etc.). All that changed when I watched my first Batman movie and since then I try to see most of the super hero movies as and when they are released. At the same time, I have found a good friend, Saurav Roy, who is much more passionate about comic books and super hero characters and ensures that we watch any superhero movie first day first show. We watched The Dark Knight Rises – twice in the same day (first show and the last show). Booked the tickets for Superman – The Man of Steel, but couldn’t see it due some print issues all over Mumbai for the movie. Walked 4-5kms on pitch dark roads in Chandigarh to watch Wolverine while waiting to the catch the train next morning. And today we are going to see Thor 2 – The Dark World. Even though the movie is all about Thor, I like the character of Loki and it is played extremely well by Tom Hiddleston. He appears extremely calm from outside but full of anger inside. His manages this look very well and comes off as a smart calculating villain. Excited to know what he is up to in this movie. I really liked the first movie and I am hoping this one is even better than the first one.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

I wanted to go for this movie for a very long time and was finally able to watch it today with Geeta. I am writing this post assuming most of my readers have already watched this movie and they would be able to related to what I am saying. In case readers who are yet to see this movie: Beware spoilers ahead.

While the first half of the movie was very good, the second half of the movie became extremely predictable. I would have loved if the movie had ended when Kalki’s vidaai is over and Ranbir is shown leaving the wedding with his camera and bag. The reason I felt the movie should have ended earlier is because there is no harm in two people acknowledging the love they have for each other and yet mature enough to realize that they are both different and want different things in life. And because of the respect they have for each other and their individual dreams, they decide to not be together.  I felt the movie post that was very much stretched and it seemed that the director really wanted Ranbir and Deepika to meet in the end.

The music of the movie is good and can be listened to over and over again. This movie is only about Ranbir and he is simply brilliant. The rest of the characters are good in their parts. Aditya Roy Kapur needs to play something other than a drunkard or he will probably end up getting Drunkard of the Year award.

Overall a decent movie and can be watched once. Die hard Ranbir fans will love this movie.

Man of Steel

The movie Man of Steel comes out next month. Another super hero film – I think this movie is going to be one of the best super hero movies in a long time. However, Superman movies have been around since quite some time now. The comic book has been around ever longer. So what is it that attracts us to Superman? We all know he is a fictional character and things he does are something which normal people like you and me would never be able to do. However, as kids we all wanted to be Superman. Someone who will be able to achieve the impossible. When I think of this, I realize that during the times of crisis or while facing a difficult objective or while following our dreams and passion, we transform ourselves into something more than ordinary to achieve the impossible.  There are times in our lives when we are faced with insurmountable odds, where everything is stacked against us – still we face those challenges and do everything possible to come out on top and win. This is what makes me believe there is a Man of Steel in all of us. This is what I feel attracts us to Superman.
