Climate change..

Excessive heat in India
Powerful hurricanes hitting the US
Mumbai getting drowned by 37 inches of rain in a single day

These are some of the headlines that I have been reading since last 12 months and I think Nature is finally striking back at us for disrupting her system. I think this is only the beginning, with polar ice melting, the entire ecosystem is going to be changed within the next 100 years. Some cities will get totally be drowned, while some will face acute shortage of water or will face drought. Good luck humanity.

Understanding Men

Read this somewhere and found it pretty interesting and true..

“In our society it is socially acceptable for women to feel. We can cry, we get all blubbery, we can pout, we get our feelings hurt, we can be scared of bugs and storms and those things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, we can be helpless when it comes to changing a tire … and the more we are these things, the more ‘female’ we appear. But men … poor men don’t have society’s permission to be emotional or weak or have fears or be incapable of getting things done. If a man walked into a club, rushed up to his male friends and started crying most people would think that something was wrong – terribly wrong! Because men just aren’t allowed to cry, or be scared, or feel.

What else does society not allow men to do? Not be a success. For instance, if Sally was unemployed and getting desperately low on funds, we wouldn’t think all too badly of her if she just finally up and got married, letting her new husband take over supporting her. But what about an unemployed man who marries for security? He wouldn’t be regarded with too much respect by our society, as we believe men are supposed to work hard, produce, provide, and be raving successes. In fact, we have come to view men this way so strongly that many men today are very uncomfortable around a woman that is more successful, or earns more, than he does. By society’s belief, and by everything he’s ever been taught – and even by his own primal instincts – he believes he should be the provider. You’ve heard it time after time after time, “no wife of mine is going to work!” or “I feel guilty because she earns more money than me.”

Now, let’s take Sally again. Sally can use her feminine wiles to catch the man she’s looking for. She can shake her little behind, and bat her eyes, and *poof* a man instantly appears to sweep her away. But what can a man do to catch a woman? Can he do the same thing? Of course not! He has to prove he has value and worth as a ‘man’. He has to be successful, be strong, and make women happy. Can you imagine how lonely our men must feel? Whew! They have been taught to be strong; be brave; don’t cry; be responsible; protect; don’t complain; die for your country; provide for your family; don’t feel; chin up; take over; don’t need anyone; don’t ask for help; etc. – and still they are in trouble by us all the time. Wow, when do we give them the permission to be real? How isolated man must feel! Imagine the pain, loneliness, insecurities, and longings you would feel if you were suddenly challenged to be a man. Men have been subdued by their primal instinct and by society. They are uncomfortable with their need to love and to be loved. Not only can he not feel comfortable to express love or allow love, he sometimes doesn’t even acknowledge love himself. He hides his heart, or denies his heart, under a false front of hardened indifference.”

Earth shots

This spectacular “blue marble” image is the most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet.

Friday Night

Last Friday night was one of the best friday nights I have had in a long long time. I was actually supposed to go a strip club along with my friends since one of them was celebrating his birthday, but then decided against it since I had never been clubbing in US before. I was like.. let me go to a regular club and then I will move on to a strip club (Thanx Medha). One of my roomie’s friend was also celebrating her birthday on Friday, so they had invited to come along with them to H2O. I was like yea sure.. but then again that didnt work out. Finally one of my friends called and asked if I had any plans and I was like NO. So he was like lets go somewhere, I suggested to go Adams Morgan and then after a lot of deliberation we decided to head there. We reached there at around 11:30 and first bar we hit was Angry Inch.. Now the bar was good.. but it wasnt something that I was looking for. So after a shot of goldschlager and vodka, we decided to go this lounge called ANZU. The place was absolutely awesome, the crowd was awesome.. nice hot chics.. what else could 2 guys ask for. We decided to get white russian and after that got our asses on the dance floor. Now I am not a great dancer.. but I guess when alcohol and music get mixed.. you reach a different level and I guess I was at that level. I guess all cities have generally observed clubbing rules, I wasnt aware of mine, so I was just dancing around by myself. Right next to me, were 2 awesomely beautiful and hot girls. After a while we started dancing together and it was the best time I could ever have. Now before you people think anything weird, there was no bumping and grinding.. I acted like a gentleman. The music at the place was awesome, the DJ even played Aashiq Banaya.. I dont know what movie it is from.. but it was awesome. After an hr or so the ladies decided to leave to check out some other places, so me and my buddy decided to go have Irish Car Bomb. After that we decided to leave and check out this place called Heaven and Hell.. The place was dull.. not too many people.. so after a while we decided to leave. It was around 2 or so that we decided to get some dinner. It does feel weird when u are eating soo late and when u are sort of high. My buddy drove us back and I got home around 4am. After which I was still awake for another hour.. checking emails and watching some movie. Finally fell asleep at around 5 or so.

Overall it was an awesome experience.. I wish to do this often. Next saturday heading out to some new kewl place. I didnt know I had a party animal in me.. I guess it is about time for it to come out..

Awesome lyrics

I have been searching the lyrics for this song since last 6-8 months and finally I have found it… The song is Sapnay by Silk Route from their album Pehchaan. I absolutely love this song. Everytime I listen to this song.. I just feel peaceful for some reason.. my mind just escapes into a different world.. probably one of the only few songs that do this to me.

Here are the lyrics..

sapnay hein sooni raatein
jaane kyon kho gaye
socha tha.. sahil pe milega..
thehra saa ek pal
ek pal

chandni hain ye ratein
phir bhi toote sitare
dhoondte hain yeh zameen pe
thehra saa ek pal
ek pal

andheri daasta, kho gaye kahaan
ham to reh gaye.. phir wahein

aati hai ek sadaa… vadiyoon se kaheen
ajnabi rahon pe milega
thehra saa ek pal
ek pal

andheri daasta, kho gaye kahaan
ham to reh gaye.. phir wahein

Geek lifestyle and problems

I found an interesting article about Geek lifestyle and problems associated with it.
#1 Horrible Sleep Hygiene
Insomnia and altered sleep patterns is one of the most common complaints to my office. Frequently the complaint is of light sleep or of multiple awakening throughout the night. Although this can be a symptom of depression, this is typically caused by poor sleep habits. It typically starts with somebody waking up in the middle of the night and turning on the laptop or TV. This begins to happen more and more frequently until the patient starts to worry about waking up as soon as they go to bed at night. This stress makes the sleep worse and worse until they finally come to see me.
The fix is typically easy if the habit is not too ingrained. The bed should only be used for two things–sex and sleep. If one is awake in bed for more than 10-15 minutes, one should get up and do something non-stimulating. Listening to music or reading are excellent choices. Lying in bed and watching TV or using the laptop are the worst. These stimulate the brain to wake up even more. If this happens repeatedly, the habit will be formed.

A few of my patients have tried “sleep hacking” and it almost always fails. The dangers of hacking sleep have been explored by a physician elsewhere.

#2 Headaches

Recurrent headaches are a very frequent complaint among heavy computer users. Typically these are caused by a multitude of issues regarding computer use. If they occur the same time every day or if they do not appear on non-work days, these are the clues that point me to a computer cause.

Often when I tell my patients that I suspect it is their work environment, they come back and tell me me how they fixed it. Poor screen position, too small font, screen too bright/too dark, poor sitting posture are all commonly reported causes of chronic headache. When in doubt, I just tell them to trade offices for a couple of days. If they feel better in the other office, then it suggests that it is related to their personal work environment.

Poor eyesight is frequently believed to be a cause of chronic headaches although I believe that is very overrated. What I have seen a few times is that people with glasses having too strong of a prescription. Type-A people when getting refracted for glasses will mistakenly report that higher and higher powers make them see better. To check for this when you get your glasses, just ask your doctor if the manual refraction is close to the computer-predicted, automated refraction. If the manual is a lot higher, then over-power should be a consideration.

#3 Back Pain
Back pain is a frequent complaint in my office as well. In the general patient population, chronic back pain is often a sign of depression; however, in the geek this is more frequently due to work conditions or to overuse. Poor posture, incorrectly sized chair, or poorly positioned monitors are common culprits.

The weekend warrior syndrome often causes the overuse back injury here. All week long the back becomes weak from sitting at the computer desk all day. On the weekend, yard work or lifting causes strain on these underdeveloped muscle units.

#4 Poor Attention Span
I am always amazed at the number of people that mention to me that their attention span is poor. Frequently they will wonder if they have ADD. Sometimes they will even complain about the inability to stay awake during long meetings or stay focuses on non-computer tasks.

First, if one has poor sleep for any reason, the attention span and ability to stay awake during the day will be severely impacted. Attention span cannot be fixed unless the sleep pattern is healthy.

I believe that “poor attention span” has unique aspects in the geek population because I believe many people become geeks because computers have always been one of the things that keep them stimulated. In fact, if I question someone about their attention span, they never, even have problems staying focused on their computer work. If someone is in the middle of some exciting programming, the focus is always there. Therefore, it is not just a generic “attention” problem.

I believe this relative perception of poor attention span is actually caused by two factors. The first is genetic. The brains of some people are just programmed to multi-task. These people likely excel in a computer-rich environment for this reason. I believe the second factor is a simple training issue. Let me explain with an analogy.

If I were to go and try to run a few miles this weekend, I would not be able to easily do so. My muscles are just out of shape from my lack of exercise over the last few months. However, if you take one of the these college basketball athletes, any of them would be able to run miles without even breathing heavy. However, if you made them sit down and try to learn Java for 12 hours a day, most of them would be asleep at their desk before lunch.

The typical geek trains their brain to be heavily focused while multitasking day after day. Is it surprising that this same brain does not do well when forced to isolate down to one task? Listening in a meeting is a very isolated, very passive event. Coding, developing, debugging — these are not passive at all. The geek brain is just not trained to sit quietly and listen.
